About

Our Beginnings

Zoli_mods_denoise_Contr.pngDouble 8 Foods started as Seven Eleven Supermarket in 1957. Our first store opened that year on August 8, at the corner of 30th St. and North Sherman Drive on the Near North side of Indianapolis. Zoltan Weisz opened that store with the idea of offering the neighborhood top-grade merchandise at low cost and staying open longer than the competition. We never lost sight of the original goal. As the years passed, we continued to add stores, serving more neighborhoods in the process. Our store on Fairfield Ave., near 34th and N. Central Ave., was added last in 1971. We changed our name to Double 8 Foods in 2000 with an eye towards the future, by emphasizing foods as our main concern.

Our Accomplishments

Our reputation and accomplishments have grown over the years. In 1959, Seven Eleven Supermarkets was the first grocery business in the State of Indiana to hire an African American as a store manager. We established ourselves as an industry leader in equal employment. In 2003 we created a unique concept in offering dollar items within our grocery stores by putting a Dollar Store within the supermarket at our Fairfield location. Double 8 Foods has not only served the many thousands of customers who shop at our stores but have also engaged and helped the north side neighborhoods where the stores are located. Many churches, schools, neighborhood associations, civic organizations and individuals have received our support.
